...

Hey there, fellow travelers on this wild journey called life! I don’t know about you, but if I’m being honest, patience isn’t always my strong suit. But here’s the thing – I’m not just going to shrug and admit defeat. I’m actively doing something about it because I’m a student of Jesus, and I’m committed to knowing Him both vertically (my relationship with Him) and horizontally (my relationships with others, based on my relationship with Him). See how that forms the cross? He died on that cross so we could imitate Him, taking His light and spreading it everywhere, like a beautiful perfume. (Speaking of, I’m a big fan of Yara – it’s good stuff!).

The Bible actually says we are the aroma of Christ, a sweet-smelling fragrance. To some, we’re life, and to others, we’re death. Pretty powerful, right? But how can we be that aroma if we’re not patient? Patience is one of the fruits of the Spirit, and this summer, I’ve decided to really dive deep and press into all nine of them.

I started off with peace, and I’m still really focusing on that. But then, just today, someone at work really tested my nerves. The answer to her question was so obvious, and my initial reaction was to “flip out.” But then I remembered: peace is on that list! So, instead of reacting, I took a breath and simply asked her, “Well, what do you think?”

This experience really got me thinking about patience, and it’s why I’m talking to you about it today. Jesus must have been incredibly patient, don’t you think? Imagine dealing with His disciples – Peter, who denied Him three times; Judas, whom He knew would betray Him. And honestly, forget about them for a second. Think about us! We’re a hot mess, aren’t we? I think about me, and how incredibly patient Jesus has been with me. I was on a path to destroy my destiny, but He literally picked me out of the pit and crowned me with love and compassion. That’s incredible patience right there.

So, I’m more than happy to embark on this adventure with Jesus to become more patient, to dig into deeper dimensions of what it truly means to have a relationship with patience. What’s my relationship with patience like? Am I truly growing? Because there are levels to this, right? I might be patient with some things, but then something like that question from my coworker today pops up, and I realize I have a ways to go.

There’s no shortcut when your goal is to know Jesus better. When you merge your thinking with the question, “How would Jesus treat this person? How would He demonstrate patience? What tone would He use?” — that’s when the real work begins.

I’m committed to being a student of Jesus, and as I continue to press into relational health, I hope you’ll join us here on the East Speaks team. Because, simply put, to know you is to grow you. And most people don’t even realize they need a growth plan.
