Let’s talk about growth – the real, messy, gritty side of it.
Sometimes, growth can feel like a continuous uphill battle with all sorts of unexpected twists, turns, and setbacks. I know I could easily get on here and say, “Growth is just so wonderful!” But that wouldn’t be the truth, at least not the whole truth. Today, I’m reflecting on a recent experience in my own journey, and I hope it resonates with some of you, too.
In my technology consulting business, I had this big win lined up—a deal with one of my city agency clients that would’ve brought in $52,000. The talent was found, interviewed, and all set to go. It seemed like a done deal. But then? Silence. Radio silence. The candidate just stopped responding, and the deal I was counting on now seems to be slipping through my fingers. This wasn’t just a financial blow; it was a mental one, too.
Yet here I am, still moving forward. Because growth isn’t just about the wins—it’s about resilience, about finding joy in the journey itself. And this is something I remind myself of all the time: I’m not just growing for the results; I’m growing for the journey.
In my particular field—technology consulting—there aren’t many people who look like me. There’s a unique disparity when it comes to representation, especially as a Black woman selling technology services to government agencies. It’s a tough landscape, but it also fuels my determination to break barriers, to pave the way not just for myself but for those who come after me.
You see, growth is much like surgery. In the middle of it, there’s a lot of chaos and mess, and it’s hard to see how things will come together. But after it’s all stitched up and healed, the results speak for themselves. It’s all about persevering through those messy moments with the faith that there’s something amazing on the other side.
So, I’m going to keep going, heels clicking, eyes forward. And I encourage you to do the same. Whatever setbacks, detours, or disappointments you’re facing right now—don’t give up on your journey. Growth is indeed a messy business, but it’s also thrilling, filled with anticipation, possibilities, and promise. Keep your eyes on those promises, and remember why you started.
