Did you hear about the nearly 1,000 people who got stuck on Mount Everest back on October 8th? Yeah, almost a thousand climbers, stranded at the top of the world in the middle of a blizzard. When I read that, I couldn’t help but laugh a little—here I am working on patience, and suddenly I realize… I’ve got nothing on those folks.
I mean, think about it. They climbed a literal mountain, faced freezing winds, and got stuck up there waiting—probably scared, exhausted, and uncertain when rescue would come. That’s a different level of patience altogether.
But the kind of patience I’ve been pressing into lately isn’t about surviving the cold or waiting for rescue helicopters—it’s about cultivating the fruit of the Spirit. It’s about pressing higher in faith, in character, in self-control. Not Mount Everest the mountain, but the Mount Everest of the spirit.
The Law of Mount Everest — And Why It Matters for Growth
John Maxwell talks about something called “The Law of Mount Everest” in his book The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork. It says:
“As the challenge escalates, the need for teamwork elevates.”
That hit me hard as a small business owner. Because in my team, we grow with intention. We read. We learn. We stretch. Growth isn’t optional here—it’s culture. You’re going to grow because there’s no other way forward.
And when challenges rise—and they will—the only way to keep climbing is together. That’s the law of Mount Everest in action: as the climb gets harder, we need each other more.
Jesus Had a Growth Plan Too
Now, when I think about pressing into spiritual growth, I can’t help but think of Jesus. The Bible literally says He grew—in wisdom, in stature, in favor with God and man.
Imagine that—the Son of God had a growth plan.
He modeled what it means to submit to transformation. Think of that moment with the woman caught in adultery. A crowd is ready to stone her, everyone angry and self-righteous—and Jesus just kneels down and starts writing in the sand.
Can you imagine the patience that took?
He already knew their hearts, their pasts, their secrets. And yet, He didn’t lash out. He didn’t shout. He paused. That’s the kind of patience I want to climb toward—the kind that calms storms instead of creating them.
Climbing the Right Mountain
If we’re going to climb, let’s climb that mountain. Let’s press into patience, self-control, and grace. Because that climb brings dividends you can’t measure in money—it brings peace, wisdom, and strength.
Proverbs says it perfectly:
“Better a patient man than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.”
So, in this season, I’m choosing to climb the mountain of inner growth. The one that demands endurance, reflection, and sometimes waiting in the cold, trusting that the view will be worth it.
And maybe—just maybe—we all need to overdose on patience in this fast-paced, impatient world. Because true patience doesn’t make us passive—it makes us powerful.
If you’re finding yourself in a season where patience feels like a steep climb, you’re not alone. Growth takes time, and sometimes we just need someone to help us see the path a little clearer.
