Life has a way of testing us, sometimes in the harshest of ways. For years, I struggled with what I call “thug thoughts”—those relentless, negative voices in my head that hammered me with doubt, anxiety, and fear. These thoughts didn’t just whisper; they roared, leaving me a shell of myself. I was consumed by anxiety and self-doubt to the point where even daily tasks felt impossible.
The Turning Point
In my book, Peace Beyond the Splinter, I reflect on this battle. On page 57, I recount one of the most persistent thug thoughts I faced: “What if I go crazy? What if I develop schizophrenia?” These fears played on repeat in my mind like a broken record. It felt endless until I stumbled upon a scripture that shifted my perspective:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.”
That scripture became my anchor. Slowly, I started to replace my fears with faith. I didn’t just sit and hope for change—I prayed, journaled, and leaned on God to help me reframe my mindset.
From Surviving to Thriving
Fast-forward to today, I run a successful IT consultancy that contracts with the government. This wasn’t an overnight transformation. Thirteen years ago, I was an employee, working under a boss who profited immensely from my hard work while I barely scraped by. At the time, I was too anxious and overwhelmed to envision a better future for myself. But then, something clicked.
With the encouragement of my husband, Brian, I took a leap of faith. He saw in me what I couldn’t see in myself—a promise, a potential to build something greater. I started my own business, and while the journey has been anything but easy, I’m here to tell you: change is possible.
The Strategy That Saved Me
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is this: you can’t let thug thoughts steal your promise. They are thieves, robbing you of your peace, joy, and future. Here’s what worked for me:
- Recognize the Thought: Awareness is the first step. When a thug thought creeps in, name it.
- Combat It with Truth: I turned to scriptures and affirmations to fight back.
- Repeat and Recycle: Reprogramming your mind takes time and persistence.
- Focus on Growth: I committed to personal development, and it transformed my life.
On page 63 of my book, I share more about this strategy and how it helped me rebuild my life. I’m still on this journey, but I can confidently say that subscribing to a growth plan has made all the difference.
